The 1970s: Hard, Chic, and Hicksian
Mark and Duane Hampton moved into this Manhattan apartment in 1971. Its first look was hard, chic, and Hicksian, with glossy red walls, black wool tuxedo sofas, maroon curtains trimmed in black, white plastic tables, and a painting they called "Alligators in the Sludge."

1980s
Ten years later, the living room turned all cozy, in the eighties taste for cabbage rose chintz, sisal, and Edwardian upholstery shapes.

1990s and Now: Neutral and Soothing
The same room, photographed in February. It has looked this way since 1991, when Mark quieted it considerably with a neutral scheme of subtle painted stripes on the walls and more assertive stripes in the fabrics. Duane attributes the swing toward beige to getting older and the growing wish for a home that soothes. She doubts he would have ever changed it. Well, maybe the curtains. ADVICE: "Colors that are in your face, too bold, can look flat and harsh, especially after a little wear and tear on the room," —Mark Hampton.
